Once designated to be a jet fighter base, Richard Bong State Recreation Area is named after Major Richard I. Bong, a Poplar, WI native who was America's leading air ace during World War II. The air base was abandoned three days before concrete was to be poured for a 12,500-foot runway. Local citizens had the foresight to protect this open space for future generations.

To assist and/or lead any and all activities at Richard Bong State Recreational Area (RBSRA). Be it as a Steward, a citizen scientist, an educator. This is a general call for help in making RBSRA a better place for the general public. To educate, motivate, excite adults, kids to/of/for the joys of Wisconsin and the outdoors in general. Bong has over 4600 acres of land in Kenosha County and needs leaders to assist and promote. Pick your passion and I will help you make things happen there (and beyond). Get started on Wednesdays, 9 AM at our Visitors Center. We call it Workday Wednesdays. Email bongnaturalistassociation@gmail.com for details or visit bongnaturalistassociation.org
